Stand up paddle boarding is a super easy water sport to learn and you can become an expert paddle boarder in no time.
Today, we’re going to discuss everything you need to know about inflatable paddle boards and mastering the basics of how to paddle sup in four steps
Adjust the paddle to the proper height, which It should top out 6’’ above your head – roughly a hand’s breadth. Keep your arms relatively straight to get a wider range of motion. You will be using a lot of core strength, more so than your arms. Paddle using a down and back motion, dipping the paddle in the water at the front side of your board and pushing it towards the back side. Switch sides every few paddles to remain straight.
Holding a paddle board paddle is similar to how you would hold a canoe paddle. Place one hand on the T Bar grip at the top of the shaft and the other hand slightly past the the middle, closer to the blade. You can switch hands as needed to paddle on both sides to keep the board straight. Make sure the paddle is facing the right way! The angle of the blade should be facing away from you- this will eliminate drag.
TIP: Holding your PADDLE the front of your paddle should face the same direction as you.
Before you dream of endless hours on the water or setting out on a rustic river trek, you must first learn how to stand on your board.
You’ll notice the carry handle that you used to bring your board in the water located right in the middle of the deck. That is the center and balance point of the paddleboard. When you get on your board, Kneeling on board with knees on either side of the carry handle, make sure bodyweight is centered over the board both sideways and lengthwise.
In the kneeling position, lean forward and place the paddle horizontally across the deck of the board. Grip the sides of the board with both hands
Slowly stand one foot at a time, placing your feet on the sweet spot where your knees where. Continue gripping the board to help stabilize yourself. Rise to a standing position, adjusting your feet as necessary. They should be hip-width apart, and you should feel relatively stable. Make sure to bend your knees slightly and keep your core centered over the board.
Forward stroke(This basic stroke propels your board forward through the water.)
Place the paddle in the water at arm’s length and draw it back along the board, keeping your top hand and blade perpendicular.
To stay in a straight line, take a few strokes on one side then switch to a few strokes on the other.
To turn left, place the paddle in the water on the right side. At the same time, turn your torso to the left side.
Keep a low stance and pull to the right, towards the tail with the paddle, while twisting and leaning to the left with your torso. You’ll feel the board shift to the left quickly.
Sweep Stroke(The sweep stroke is useful for turning your board while standing still or moving.)
To change direction, push water towards the tail on one side and the nose on the other. You’ll turn faster if the blade is away from the board.
